Project's Objectives

The design of a Wind Energy Park at the local geographical feature of Yankee Ridge in the vicinity of Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, USA.
Yankee Ridge is
a moraine of the Wisconsin glaciation which smoothed out the already flat Illinois landscape.  It extends from north east of the city of Champaign-Urbana,  to the village of Philo and ends at Seven Hills .

  • March 12, 2007 - Initiation of Project web site
  • March 13, 2007 - Obtaining contour map of location from University of Illinois Library
  • March 14, 2007 - Obtaining Platt Book from the University of Illinois Extension Service showing land ownership in the Champaign-Urbana area.
  • April 3, 2007 - Aerial photograph obtained using Terraserver from the USA Geological Survey of wind park location.
  • April 3, 2007 - Topographical map obtained using Terraserver from the USA Geological Survey (USGS) of wind park location.
  • Identifying existing electrical power utilities and available power transmission lines and their voltage levels.
  • Obtaining data about wind conditions in the area such as wind roses.
  • Identifying airports, landing approaches and radar sites and checking Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) about siting
  • Deciding of power level for first phase of project
  • Deciding on number of turbines and their rated power
  • Choosing manufacturer of turbines
  • Using Google Earth to choose site of the wind turbimes.
  • Perform Environmental Impact Analysis about chosen site.
  • Perform Economical analysis of project.
  • May 2nd, 2007, End of Feasibility Analysis Phase.
